Stop, Pause & Breathe: Breaking the societal norm of constant hustle

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the first episode of One Life.

Today we are here to challenge the societal norm of chasing the next big dream. We are constantly asked the question, “What is your next plan or next step?” Do you want to get into this college, or this job or want to get married?” And we end up in this vicious loop of cat and mouse chase. However, the bigger question is, “Do we have to go after something? Can’t we stop and take a deep breath? Soak at the moment that we probably spend days and months to achieve.”

Yes, that is perfectly acceptable and actually should be the norm. However, that is not how our society works, and we all know it. Growing up, our family and friends ask us, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Unfortunately, that is where the pressure of the next big step starts. I am in no way doubting their intentions. However, we subconsciously develop the mindset of preparing for the next big thing. We join clubs, start coaching, research about it and whatnot. And we begin the hustle that takes us in the Black Hole of random things.

We start looking up to the pioneers of that field, try to follow what they did and work towards it. I am not saying that is the wrong thing to do. However, the impact is hit or miss, especially in the digital world. Many people succeeded at a young age. On the one hand, it inspires you to start working towards their goal early on in their life and take the first step. On the other hand, it demotivates people that if they have not done something yet, they may never be able to do it.

I am guilty of doing the same. Looking up to the success stories, as much as it inspires me, somehow demotivates me. I am in my mid-twenties and just started working after completing my education, moving to achieve the next big thing, looking up to successful young personas and somehow developing an inferiority complex. Yes, I have been there, and I still don’t know how to overcome this fully.

However, I have changed something this year. I am giving myself a little more breathing space.

STOP, PAUSE & BREATHE!!

Pat yourself on the back! You have done it! There is so much more to do, but one step at a time.

If you try to climb too fast, you will either lose sight of your goal or, worst case, stumble back. Not all popcorns pop at the same time. And in fact, the ones that pop too early might end up getting burnt.

So, next time, instead of asking what your next step will be, ask yourself: How are you going to enjoy this exact moment? Be proud of your achievements, take credit for them and understand that you deserve to enjoy the moment.

To cherishing the present!!

With Love,

One-Life
